Give Your Body A Break Virtual Detox
The First Offender

Ok, so you love your glass of wine every night (or 2 or 3), you need it to relax?  Then you need coffee to get yourself up in the morning!

People get most upset when starting the detox about giving up alcohol and caffeine!  I think they may rather give up their first born.

What about the antioxidant properties of red wine, you know the polyphenols?  Doesn't that make it good for you?

Maybe you know in your heart that you are drinking just a liiiittttlllee  tooo much!  (or a lot).  The next 28-days will bring some great revelation about your connection to many foods you now enjoy and alcohol is one of them.

Many times clients will say, I never realized how often I reach for a drink until I stopped drinking!  I have made so many connections to stress, loneliness, fatigue, social settings and alcohol, I am amazed!

OR you may be attached to one of the other offending foods....sugar?  Caffeine?  Dairy?  Wheat?

We shall see!

This government organization did a study on death and disease related to alcohol, check it out, you will be amazed at the high numbers for liver, pancreas and heart disease!

Alcohol and Disease Study

There are some detox programs that allow you to drink moderately during your detox.

Hmmmm.....mostly they do this because they think YOU don't have the will-power (or won't-power) to stop drinking for 28-days.

Baloney!  You can do ANYTHING for 28-days, right?

Remember there are several things you are trying to accomplish during your detox:

1.  Give Your Body A Break from toxic foods:  Alcohol is extremely hard on your liver.  Your liver is your primary detoxification organ.  How much sense does it make to try to eliminate toxins and at the same time weaken your liver?  That is like adding water to your gas because it is so expensive.  In a very short time you won't have to worry about how expensive gas is because you will be replacing your motor!

2.  Give Your Body A Break from digestion:  Alcohol is high in sugar, your pancreas really has to work hard to process it.  It is cooked so it uses up lots of your precious digestive enzymes.

3.  Give Your Body A Break from toxic lifestyle habits:  Alcohol, like all other addictives, can creep up behind you and grab you from behind and hold on with a death grip!  Taking a break for 28-days gives you new awareness about your connection to alcohol and gives you the opportunity to regain control!

Aren't these some great reasons to eliminate something for a measley 28-days?

Hey, here's a side bonus:  If you tend to drink too much at the office party, taking a break from alcohol for 28-days before the holidays may give you the ability to drink a little less and not go home with a lampshade on your head!

One more tidbit....there is a VERY STRONG connection to alcoholic tendencies and gluten sensitivity.  Giving your body a break from both will provide some very interesting insight into what your body can handle!

Replacements for Alcohol
You really won't miss the alcohol after about the first 3-5 days.  You may find yourself at a loss if you are at a cocktail party, dinner or other event where alcohol is a key component.

Here are some ideas:

  • If you feel like it will be a problem for you, just avoid places where you will be tempted, it's only 28-days!
  • Get a mineral water and a lime or have the bartender make you a citrus beverage with mineral water but NO Grenadine!  Ask for what you want!  Tell the bartender you are on a detox and not drinking alcohol or sugar, see if they have ideas. Carry your stevia with you, put in a few drops, stir with your straw or drink stirrer and suddenly you look just like everyone else.
  • If you are at a social gathering, bring your own mineral water; I recommend Gerolsteiner.  It is naturally carbonated from the ground so you don't have the Co2, which is bad for your health!
  • Just remember, sparkling mineral water with Co2 (like Pierre) is acid forming, so it is only for a treat, not a regular event!

If you end up realizing (or already know) that alcohol has too strong a grip on you, there are some great groups to help.  Franklin has some AMAZING recovery programs that meet all over town day and night.
